Sapphire refers to all corundum gemstones, with the exception of the ruby red variant, which is known as ruby. However, the term sapphire is commonly used to describe blue gemstones, but this blue should not be confused with the color of a clear sky, but rather with all shades of blue, including very dark blue and black.

Sapphire is found in a wide range of colours and shades. Sapphire-bearing rocks are known as pegmatites, and they were transported and deposited in alluvium in riverbeds via erosion processes. The most important countries in sapphire production are Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), India, and more recently, the USA, Australia and Nigeria.
